Science
Our Intent for Science
At WASPS we believe that Science is a body of knowledge built through experimental testing of ideas; it has changed our lives and is vital to our future. But Science is also methodology – a practical way of finding reliable answers to questions we may ask about the world around us. Science in our school is about developing children’s ideas and ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live through investigation.
“The scientist is not a person who gives the right answers; they are the one who asks the right questions” Claude Levi-Strauss
At WASPS we believe that science inspires children, encourages them to be inquisitive, nurtures their innate curiosity and enables them to develop a range of skills that are useful in all aspects of learning. By the end of their primary education our pupils should be equipped to make informed decisions about new technologies, their health and the scientific opportunities around them. Our science curriculum offers a broad range of experiences designed to provide pupils with a progression of scientific understanding, skills and knowledge. Understanding of key ideas in science is built on across the key stages and a progression of skills allows pupils to move from early observations and exploration, to considered questioning and drawing out of ideas. We aim for our children to leave WASPS with a scientific knowledge and sense of excitement and intrigue that empowers them to explore the world of science for themselves. After all:
“What we know is a drop, what we don’t know is an ocean.” Isaac Newton
