Equalities Team
Our vision is to create a school in which everyone is respectful of each other and is tolerant of different views. We want to have a voice in decisions about our school.
The Equalities Team is a democratic team who seek to promote equality for all across our school. They do this by learning about global and national policies that make sure things are fair for everyone such as ‘The Rights of the Child’, ‘Protected Characteristics’ and ‘Democracy’. The majority of the team have a range of special educational needs – they advocate for other children who have similar needs and understand what may be difficult for them. There is an interview process for prospective new members.
The Equalities Team meet fortnightly to focus on a particular theme. A chairperson sets the agenda and shares this at the meeting, and minutes are kept so that they can return to things to make sure they have been actioned.
The Equalities Team have shared information at whole school assemblies on, for example, ‘inclusion’ and sometimes invite guest speakers to meetings to talk about the work that they do to promote equality.
The team is beginning to work on contributing to our school policies and this year will be producing a newsletter called ‘Equality Matters’ which they will distribute to each class to share their work more widely. They also want to link with schools in other countries so that we can learn more about what it is like to live in different countries with different governments.
The Equalities Team have conducted audits and research to lead changes in our school. For example, diversifying our class names, getting new resources that represent our wide range of needs and cultures, and encouraging everyone to think more about discrimination and equality.
