Children work sometimes as individuals, sometimes in groups and sometimes as a whole class, depending on the nature of the activity. The teaching style shifts more towards whole class instruction as the children move up through the school.
Since 1990 we have been a Locally Managed School. One of the effects of administering our own budget has been a reduction in class size, whilst creating new classes and employing more staff.
The aim of the school curriculum is to offer each pupil a broad general education. We seek to foster and develop childrens individual skills and talents.
Our teaching of Mathematics and English is often ability grouped across the year group in order to target childrens individual learning needs effectively.
In other areas of the curriculum we operate a topic based approach providing opportunities for cross curricular learning. This provides an effective way of delivering the curriculum and allows the children to focus on a range of subject areas simultaneously.
Childrens needs and the progress of individual children are reviewed and assessed regularly, taking into account the requirements of the National Curriculum.
The atmosphere and the quality of work are largely determined by the attitudes and degree of commitment of the Headteacher and staff. Staff plan carefully and thoroughly and work hard to create a lively and stimulating environment. They have high expectations of the pupils as well as of themselves.
Each term the children take home a copy of the class timetable and Curriculum Plans to share with their parents.
